Before my daughter was born someone heard we had cats. Their response was “aww, have you found a new place for your kitties to live.”
My wife and I were floored… Give away our cats?!?! Not likely!
As a result of that statement, I asked my producer of the Cat Lovers Podcast to do a special show on the topic. That’ll be out next month. Now that my daughter is born and living happily with our four cats, I thought I’d share my thoughts on the topic.
Cats and Pregnant Moms
I think this is what most people worry about when it comes to cats in the new baby household. Toxoplasmosis is a serious issue. While it most-often occurs with outdoor cats, it is just as serious with indoor ones. So yes, pregnant moms should NOT change the litter boxes. They should stay away from cat feces as much as possible.
Overall, we had no problems with our cats and their pregnant mommy. I was there all the time cleaning the litter box as often as it needed. I made sure there was no litter floating around or that Gwen was even in the room while I changed it. With that we had no problems.
And the kitties? Well, they loved their mommy as much as every… at least until the last two months.
Babies and Cats Can Live Great Together
You see, a month before our daughter was born, we decided to be on the safe side. We kicked all of the kitties out of the bedroom at night. They sure were pissed off about that. The fighting at night pretty bad, because our four kitties LOVE us to no end. It was nearly two months later when we let them in again. It was also less than two weeks after we brought our daughter home.
Our biggest concern was that late one night our kitties would jump into Kenzie’s crib and snuggle up by her face, accidentally smothering her.
That was not the case. My boys wouldn’t come near her for the first week. Gwen’s two girls came close and sniffed, but for the most part, they were all too freaked out by this little jiggling, squirming, squalling girl even get close to her. But that didn’t make us open the bedroom door.
It was probably a week after that that we finally realized nothing was gonna happen.
Rain turned into her protector. She cries and asks her mom what is wrong every time Kenzie fusses.
Jenga just wants attention. And although she has climbed over the baby once to get some attention, for the most part, she’s been friendly.
Torre is just after loving too. So as long as he can lie in my lap while I’m holding my daughter, he has no problem.
Tiziano is still a little skittish. I think definitely feels displaced, but then he’s always been the lowest cat on the totem poll in this house. So he’s taking it fairly stoically. But Kenzie starts to cry, look out! Tizi will run away and hide.
I’m sure everyone cat parent will run into different circumstances with their kitties. So don’t take my word for it. I can certainly see the potential for jealousy among our cats. But all of our cats are loving and friendly, so we aren’t concerned. In fact, we are confident we will have no problems and our daughter will grow up loving our kitties as much as we love them.
